Filing an Extension in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Tax Commissioner grants an automatic six-month extension of time to file until October 15, 2017 if you are filing for a federal extension and you owe no additional state income tax. Enclose a copy of the federal extension with your filed Oklahoma return.

An Oklahoma extension Form 504 is required when requesting an extension beyond that granted by the IRS, or if you need to make a payment to cover your anticipated tax liability. An extension is valid only if 90% of the tax due is paid on or before the original due date of the return.

An extension to file your return is not an extension of time to pay your taxes.

If You Owe

If you owe taxes, you must pay at least 90% of the amount due on or before 2016, 2017 to avoid penalty and interest charges.

Pay Online

Pay your taxes online at the Oklahoma Tax Commission Electronic Funds Transfer (ETF) Payments website.

You can also pay your taxes online at Official Payments Corporation. Penalty and Interest Charges on Tax Owed

In all cases, interest will be charged from the date the tax should have been paid (April 15, 2017) until the date of payment. The interest rate is 1.25% per month (or portion thereof) until the balance is paid in full. In addition, Oklahoma may assess a delinquent payment penalty of 5% if you do not pay at least 90% of the total tax due by April 15, 2017.

If You Do Not Owe

If you owe zero taxes or are expecting a refund from Oklahoma, there is nothing to be filed at this time, an extension is automatically granted until October 15, 2017 for the filing of your 2016 tax return.
